Regrouting in Tralee — Restore Waterproof, Mould-Free Grout Lines

Grout is the waterproofing layer people forget about. When it goes powdery, cracks at the corners or washes out along a shower floor, water gets behind the tile and starts working on the adhesive bed and the substrate — and in Kerry's damp climate it does not dry back out on its own. Bathrooms in coastal Tralee, Blennerville, Spa and Fenit, and north-facing bathrooms and utility rooms anywhere in the town, are where we see it first: dark lines that will not scrub clean, hollow-sounding tiles, and loose grout you can pick out with a fingernail.

Regrouting is a raking-out job, not a skim over the top. We rake the old grout out to a consistent depth with grout saws and oscillating tools, vacuum the joints, treat any mould that has taken hold in the bed, then let the joints dry before new grout goes in. Grouting over the old material is the shortcut that guarantees a callback — the new layer is too thin to bond, it cracks along the same lines within months, and it hides whatever is happening underneath. Where a tile is drummy or the substrate has moved we say so before quoting, because regrouting a failing bed only buys a few months.

The replacement grout is chosen for the joint rather than the price list. Flexible, water-repellent cement grouts for wall tiles and standard floors; epoxy where a wet room, shower floor or commercial kitchen needs a genuinely impermeable and chemical-resistant joint. Colour is matched to the existing scheme or changed deliberately if you want the room to read differently, and internal corners and tile-to-bath junctions are finished in fungicidal silicone rather than grout, because rigid grout in a moving joint will always crack. Finished joints are sealed and we leave cure times in writing.
