Wallpaper is less forgiving than paint, and in Tralee the wall behind it is usually the deciding factor. Older terraced property near the town centre often has lath-and-plaster or patched lime plaster that will telegraph every ridge and hollow through a flat modern paper, so it wants cross-lining first. The 1970s-1990s estates commonly have walls that were papered, painted over and papered again, and that build-up has to come off properly rather than being hung over — otherwise the old layers lift and take the new paper with them. Newer builds around Manor West and Clash are usually straightforward, but fresh plaster needs sizing so the adhesive does not get sucked dry before the drop is positioned.

Kerry's humidity changes the adhesive and the drying plan. Pattern work is where the time goes. Large-repeat florals, geometrics, panoramic murals and grasscloth all need setting out before the first drop: centre lines marked, repeats calculated, drops numbered and shading checked across batches so there is no visible change halfway along a wall. We cut around sockets, switches, coving, dado rails and awkward returns rather than trimming on the wall, and reverse-hang where a paper calls for it. Every roll is checked for batch number and damage before a single length is pasted.
